Goatchurch Cavern

Cave details

Length:
1.532 km
Vertical range:
63 m
Region:
Mendip

A maze of mostly small passages with two entrances. An unsuccessful attempt was made in 1901 to convert the larger entrance and its short section of large passage into a show cave. The smaller passages slope steeply, and end after a long body-sized tube in a blind chamber. The cave is very popular with novice groups. The original and well established survey in 1988 gave a length of just 750 metres, but a more complete subsequent survey in 2007 gave the revised length and depth, both of which are enough to earn a place in this database. The survey is available online from the UBSS site.
